Rainbow Makery Design

by Katie Holland

maker, printmaker, designer, artist, bookbinder

I am a multidisciplinary maker and printmaker creating a personal field record of the landscape. Influenced by old herbals and the graphic language of historical woodcuts, my work captures the "wild things" of liminal spaces. I merge foraged inspiration with disciplined craft to create leaf-printed leather journals, botanical relief prints, and sculptural accordion artist books, and much, much more!

My practice is an ongoing cycle of observation, gathering, and depiction. It is rooted in nature-literacy developed during a childhood of birdwatching and nature walks, a foundation that now informs my work as a multidisciplinary maker. I view my studio output as a personal field record, seeking to bind the ephemeral shapes of the natural world into tangible, lasting forms through printmaking and bookbinding.

My aesthetic is deeply informed by a lifelong fascination with old herbals and botanical handbooks. As a printmaker, I am heavily influenced by the bold, graphic language found in medieval, early modern, and Edwardian woodcuts. I utilize hand-carved blocks to document the distinctive forms of plants that colonize liminal spaces - hedges, woodland margins, and scrubland. My work ranges from minimalist relief studies of spring catkins to complex, saturated compositions that capture the untidy beauty of the natural world. Alongside my nature themed work I am also very much a cat person and cats feature heavily in my painting and prints. And from cats there is a natural leap towards the otherworldly - moths and magic!

Tactility and hands-on making are at the core of my process. Whilst I am also a traditional bookbinder and painter, I use this foundation to explore the book and page as a sculptural narrative, experimenting with collage, multimedia, gelli printing and figurative art.

By combining the seeking of the forager with the disciplined craftsmanship of the printmaker and binder, I aim to create objects that invite the viewer to reconnect with the rich natural world that surrounds them, even in urban environments. My work continues the centuries-old tradition of recording the wild things through the intersection of art and craft, particularly focusing on what is both beautiful and useful.
